[Grand Seiko] Spring Drive 9R65
Seiko first introduced the Spring Drive in 1999, but it was considered that without achieving an efficient automatic winding mechanism and a 72-hour power reserve, it could not be used in Grand Seiko. After an additional four years of development, the first Grand Seiko 9R Spring Drive movement, "Caliber 9R65," was born.
The winding mechanism and driving time were improved from the previous "manual winding with 48 hours" to "automatic winding with 72 hours." The automatic winding mechanism adopted Seiko's unique Magic (claw) lever system, developed in 1959, which improved productivity, maintainability, durability, and winding efficiency.
The intricate overlapping gear trains and the three-dimensional arrangement of the parts evoke the depth of the mountains in the Shinshu region, where the Spring Drive was born. From the power reserve gear train to the mainspring barrel, the design represents the Hotaka mountain range and the Jonen mountains.
The gears and rotor are adorned with a consistent wave pattern.
"Caliber 9R65" remains the most standard 9R Spring Drive movement, now featured in many models.
