Buying a Pre-Owned Japanese Turntable: 8 Checks Before You Order

A pre-owned turntable can look complete in a front photo while leaving important setup questions unanswered. Power requirements, rotational speed, tonearm condition, cartridge details, and transport preparation all matter when the unit will be used outside Japan.

1. Read the power label, not just the plug

Check the rated voltage, frequency, and power consumption on the rear or underside label. Japanese domestic turntables are commonly designed for 100 V, but specifications vary. A plug that fits an outlet does not establish voltage compatibility. If the rating differs from your local supply, choose suitable equipment with advice from a qualified source before operation.

2. Confirm speed and frequency compatibility

Confirm the supported record speeds, such as 33⅓ and 45 rpm, and whether speed was tested. Some turntables regulate speed electronically, while some designs can be affected by mains frequency or require a different pulley or setting. Use the exact model's documentation; do not assume that every 50/60 Hz marking means identical operation in every market.

3. Inspect the platter, mat, spindle, and bearing area

Look for a level platter, an intact mat, and clear views around the spindle. Ask whether the platter rotates freely and whether obvious wobble, scraping, or unusual noise was observed. Cosmetic marks on a platter or mat should be distinguished from deformation or mechanical contact.

4. Review the tonearm and cueing mechanism

Photos should show the tonearm tube, pivot area, counterweight, headshell connection, arm rest, lock, and cueing lever where applicable. Check for bent parts, missing weights, damaged connectors, or a cueing platform that drops abruptly. A seller's test should state what moved correctly rather than simply saying the turntable powers on.

5. Identify the cartridge and stylus separately

A cartridge body and its replaceable stylus are separate wear considerations. Confirm the cartridge model if visible, whether a stylus is fitted, and whether playback was tested with that stylus. Photos cannot reliably establish remaining stylus life, and an untested stylus should not be assumed ready for valuable records.

6. Check automatic and electronic functions one by one

For automatic or semi-automatic models, look for specific notes on start, stop, arm lift, return, repeat, size selection, speed selection, pitch control, and quartz lock as applicable. “Working” may refer only to platter rotation. Treat any function not mentioned as unconfirmed until clarified.

7. Itemize every setup accessory

• Platter, mat, headshell, cartridge, stylus, counterweight, and anti-skate weight where applicable.
• Dust cover, hinges, feet, 45 rpm adapter, cables, ground lead, and power cord.
• Transport screws, clamps, original packing pieces, manual, and model-specific tools.

A missing proprietary part can be harder to replace than a common cable. Compare the written contents with group photos and confirm that photographed accessories belong to the offered unit.

8. Confirm transport preparation before shipping

Turntables contain parts that should not move freely in transit. Depending on the design, the platter, counterweight, headshell, stylus, dust cover, or other parts may need removal or separate protection, while a suspended chassis may require transport screws. Packing needs are model-specific, so confirm the seller's plan rather than assuming that external cushioning alone is sufficient.
