Fountain Pen Listing Photos: 8 Details to Check Before Buying Pre-Owned

Good listing photos cannot tell you everything about a pre-owned fountain pen, but they can help you identify the questions that matter before ordering. Instead of judging only the first image, inspect each functional and cosmetic area in sequence.

1. View the nib from the top and side

A straight-on photo can show the nib engraving, breather hole, shoulders, and general tine position. A side view may reveal a visibly bent tip or unusual separation between the nib and feed. Camera angle can create misleading gaps, so treat a single photo as evidence to investigate rather than a final diagnosis.

• Confirm the visible nib-size and material markings against the written description.
• Look for obvious bends, cracks, corrosion, or uneven wear.
• Ask for clarification if the nib tip is out of focus or hidden by reflections.

2. Check the feed and underside

The feed sits beneath the nib and carries ink toward the tip. When an underside photo is available, look for visible cracks, displaced parts, dried ink buildup, or an unusual nib-to-feed gap. Ink staining alone does not necessarily indicate damage because a used pen may retain traces after cleaning.

3. Inspect the grip section and threads

Photos of the grip, section lip, and barrel or cap threads can reveal cracks, chips, staining, plating wear, and heavy tool marks. These areas are partly hidden when the pen is closed, so confirm that the listing includes an uncapped view.

4. Identify the filling system and included parts

A cartridge-converter pen, piston filler, vacuum filler, and other systems require different parts and checks. Match the written filling-system description to the photos. If a converter, cartridge, ink sac, or filling accessory is not shown or listed, do not assume it is included.

• For cartridge-converter models, check exactly which removable parts are included.
• For built-in fillers, look for a clear description of mechanism movement and leakage testing.
• For older pens, consider whether model-specific consumables or service may be needed.

5. Examine the cap, clip, and closure

Look at the cap lip, clip attachment, finial, inner cap when visible, and any threads or snap-fit areas. Photos may reveal cracks, dents, looseness, plating loss, or deformation. A photo cannot reliably prove an airtight cap seal, so use the seller's testing notes and ask if drying performance is important to you.

6. Scan the barrel under reflected light

Fine scratches can disappear in soft lighting. Reflections across the barrel and cap often make surface wear easier to see. Check for deeper scratches, cracks, discoloration, engraving, bite marks, posting marks, and areas that differ in gloss. Normal wear and serious damage should not be treated as the same thing.

7. Read writing-test evidence carefully

A writing sample can show that ink reached the page during that test, but it does not guarantee how the pen will feel for every buyer. Ink, paper, writing angle, pressure, and cleaning condition all affect the result. Check whether the sample is stated to come from the actual pen and whether any hard starts, skipping, or flow notes are disclosed.

8. Match accessories to the actual sale

Boxes, manuals, warranty papers, cartridges, converters, and limited-edition packaging may be useful, but only the listed and photographed contents should be expected. If numbers or model labels appear on a box or document, compare them with the pen description rather than assuming every accessory originally belonged with the pen.
