Condition grades are useful, but they should never be the only thing you use when buying a pre-owned item online. A grade is a summary. The photos, written notes, included accessories, and store policies tell the full story.

1. Treat the grade as a starting point

A condition grade can help you compare items quickly, but grading standards are not universal. One seller may focus on cosmetic appearance, while another may include operation, accessories, or packaging in the same grade.

• Read the condition description even if the grade looks high.
• Check whether the grade refers to the item only, the box only, or both.
• Look for plain notes about scratches, stains, discoloration, missing parts, or operation.

2. Match the grade against the photos

Photos are especially important for overseas buyers because you cannot inspect the item in person. Zoom in on the areas that usually show wear: watch cases and crystals, pen nibs and caps, audio front panels and terminals, figure faces, joints, box corners, and printed labels.

If a listing says an item has visible wear, the photos should help you understand where that wear is. If a photo shows something not mentioned in the text, consider that detail before ordering.

3. Separate cosmetic condition from functional condition

A pre-owned item can look clean but still need practical checks. For watches, operation and battery or movement notes matter. For fountain pens, nib alignment and filling systems matter. For audio gear, voltage, inputs, knobs, and sound checks matter. For figures and collectibles, completeness and stable parts matter.

• Cosmetic condition: scratches, stains, fading, dents, odors, or box damage.
• Functional condition: whether the item powers on, writes, keeps time, moves correctly, or includes required parts.
• Accessory condition: boxes, manuals, warranty cards, stands, cables, converters, spare links, or replacement parts.

4. Check what is included before comparing prices

Two items with the same model name may not be equal. Original boxes, manuals, papers, spare parts, cables, or stands can affect both value and usability. A lower-priced item may be missing accessories, while a higher-priced item may include more complete packaging.

5. Understand shipping, duties, and one-of-a-kind availability

International buyers should review the shipping policy and availability policy before ordering. Import duties, taxes, carrier fees, and customs processing depend on the destination country and are usually separate from the product price.
